Size 51" x 52"

The pattern used in this quilt is a traditional log cabin motif called Courthouse Steps. This quilt is made from cotton/linen blend fabric that has been dyed by hand in a natural indigo vat. Indigo is an additive dye so a darker shade of blue is achieved by dipping the fabric in the dye vat multiple times. A light shade of indigo may only have two dips in the vat but the dark shade requires eight or even ten dips.

The back of the quilt is an improvised mix of the same fabrics used on the front.

The front and back were machine pieced, meaning the patchwork is machine sewn. The quilting, meaning the stitches running throughout, is done by hand with indigo dyed cotton sashiko thread. A very special detail in the lines of hand quilting is that they alternate between light indigo and dark indigo thread. The binding is made with the darkest shade of indigo and is also sewn by hand.

This quilt is lightweight, with 100% cotton batting. This quilt was originally created for By Hand Serial's Hudson Valley lookbook.
