Farmhouse Quilt
Farmhouse Quilt
As the season transitions from summer to fall in the Hudson Valley, I see pops of red in the changing leaves and in berries on the trails. This quilt is inspired by that beautiful autumnal red.
Size - approx 48” x 48”
This pattern is based on the delectable mountains traditional quilt motif. The natural colored fabric is an undyed cotton/linen and the reds and corals come from madder root. The madder root dye bath starts out very strong, producing a true red and as the bath exhausts it creates beautiful light reds, corals and pinks.
The back of the quilt is an improvised mix of the same fabrics used on the front.
The front and back were machine pieced, meaning the patchwork is machine sewn. The quilting, meaning the stitches running throughout, is done by hand with coral colored cotton sashiko thread that was also dyed with madder. The hand quilting on this piece is abundant, each row is 1” apart. Hand quilting is a very laborious and time consuming process but the impact of the hand stitches cannot be mimicked with a machine. The binding is made with madder dyed fabric and is also sewn by hand.
This quilt is lightweight, with 100% cotton batting.
